The Import Export Code (IEC) is a 10-digit number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), required for businesses involved in importing or exporting goods from India. It serves as the primary identification for customs clearance and international transactions. Without an IEC and GST registration, shipments may be delayed, incur penalties, or be held at the port. Obtaining an IEC is one of the first steps for any business entering the global trade space.
Benefits For Everyone!
Access to Global Markets
IEC is mandatory for any business involved in import or export. It enables seamless cross-border transactions and helps Indian businesses establish a presence in the international marketplace.
Simple Online Registration
The IEC registration process is entirely online through the DGFT portal, with minimal documentation requirements, making it quick and convenient.
Minimal Documentation
Only basic identity and business documents are required, simplifying the process for new and small businesses entering foreign trade.
Lifetime Validity
Once issued, the IEC remains valid for the lifetime of the business. There is no requirement for renewal or periodic updates unless voluntarily surrendered or revoked.
Prevents Unlawful Trade
Since the code is issued based on verified identity and business details, it adds a layer of legitimacy and helps in curbing illegal imports or exports.
Eligibility for Incentives
IEC holders can access various government benefits, such as subsidies from Customs or Export Promotion Councils. Exporters may also claim GST refunds or export under LUT without paying GST.

No Routine Compliance Requirements
Unlike other registrations, IEC does not require regular filings or returns, reducing the burden on businesses while maintaining legal legitimacy.
